16 March 2019Fiddle and harp adventurers play Montrose Folk Club
Fiddle and harp duo Chris Stout and Catriona McKay bring their adventurous, tradition-inspired music to Montrose Folk Club on Thursday, March 21.
The pair share a common goal, to explore the outer limits of their respective instruments’ possibilities. Just before she met Shetlander Chris at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Dundee-born Catriona had come across a description of the harp as “limited”.
Unimpressed to say the least Catriona took this slight into her first session with Chris, who’d been recommended as a musical partner by a mutual friend, and the pair have been taking risks with traditional tunes and original compositions ever since.
Their virtuosity has won them awards, including a Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2004 and the Best Duo title at last year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and their latest album, Bare Knuckle earned rave reviews for capturing the raw excitement and unprecedented variety of colours they draw from fiddle and harp in live performances that provide new adventures every time.
