28 February 2020SCO marks Beethoven's 250th anniversary with Perth concert

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra marks Beethoven's two hundred and fiftieth anniversary with contrasting works at Perth Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 4.

Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, known as the Pastoral, was composed at the same time as his more famous, more fiery 5th, and was inspired by the great German’s frequent walks in the countryside. This is borne out by movements such as Scene by the Brook and Shepherd’s Song.

His 7th Symphony, which features in the second half of the concert, trades the 6th’s bucolic atmosphere for the surroundings of the Bohemian spa town of Teplice, where Beethoven was taking the waters. Its general mood is inspired by dance rhythms and its final movement incorporates the composer’s variation on an Irish folk song to add to the prevailing sense of celebration.

STRATA recently signed to Gearbox Records and expect to release the follow-up to their debut album, Obelisk. Meanwhile, McCreadie's first album, Turas continues to make waves, having won the Album of the Year title at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Best Album at the Scottish Jazz Awards as well as being shortlisted for the cross-genre Scottish Album of the Year Award.
